Child Custody/Parenting Evaluations

Child Custody/Parenting Evaluations

Dr. Dees is a member of the Association of Family & Conciliation Courts and provides custody/parenting assessments.

A child custody evaluation is a process in which a psychologist evaluates you, your child, and your co-parent in order to make recommendations to the court regarding custody and visitation. The goal of the evaluation is to provide the court specific information on how each parent contributes to the physical, emotional, and social development of the child(ren) in question and to make recommendations as to what appears to be in the best interest of the child(ren).

The purpose of all custody evaluations is to ensure that the needs of the children are being met in a healthy and consistent manner. The role of Dr. Dees as evaluator is that of a third-party, who serves impartially – never as an advocate for one parent or the other. Each party to the case will be given the same opportunities for contact, and each party will go through substantially similar interview processes and psychological testing.

The most common reason that a child custody evaluation is recommended is that parents have been unable to work together to decide on the details of a custody agreement. Another common reason is when one or both co-parents believe their custody agreement does not meet the needs of the child(ren).

Referrals are often initiated by the court, but parents can also request a custody evaluation. Parents should always consult a legal professional before pursing an evaluation on their own.

Once the interview process and psychological assessments are completed, Dr. Dees will make recommendations in a formal report that is prepared for the court or other referring entity. After the final report is made and delivered, Dr. Dees and the Clinic will have no further contact with the parties unless the court orders an update to be conducted. The Clinic will continue to be available to the attorneys involved until such time as the litigation is resolved.

Dr. Dees and his staff will make every effort to put your children at ease and minimize any disruptions in their lives during the assessment. Your cooperation is necessary in providing information that will help in understanding you and your family’s dynamics as they pertain to custody matters.
